Sometimes, I wonder if bringing some personal interests should simply remain at home instead of being brought to the classroom. A good friend and fellow adjunct loves Amy Winehouse’s music and seems to find a lot of depth, perhaps too much, in her music and persona. Of course, he decides to inflict his interest on a composition class. He had them listen to her song “Rehab” and then played the video for them in class. Then, they had to write a paper where they made inferences about the different meanings the song lyrics and the video would convey.
While I’m for making lessons contemporary, I’m not too crazy about his choice. To take a student’s perspective, I’m not sure I’d want to do this assignment, especially if it seemed like my instructor was seeing depth in something that isn’t there.
